The small and fine winery Badia a Passignano of Marchesi Antinori in the wine growing area Chianti Classico is still a monastery of the monks of the Order of the Vallombrosa of the Benedictines, in the cellars of the monastery ripens today the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano.

Badia a Passignano is situated in one of the most wild, romantic and beautiful areas of Chianti Classico, above Sambuca Val di Pesa, about 3 km from the Tignanello vineyard.
The vineyard extends over 50 hectares below the abbey of Badia a Passignano. Hundreds of volumes from the State Archives of Florence prove the importance of this small settlement in the history of Chianti. At the same time, the documents testify to the centuries-old viticulture in this area. In the cellars of the abbey and the monastery, from the 11th century, there are about 2000 barriques of French oak from the winery. To be worthy of history, Antinori uses only the best Sangiovese clones from the nearby ancient vineyards of Tignanello.
Wine meets pleasure in Badia a Passignano
The vineyards around the Badia were acquired by Antinori in 1987 and within a very short time one of the most exclusive and qualitatively almost perfect growing areas in the historic area has been created - the Tenuta Badia a Passignano. In 1995 Allegra Antinori opened the small Enoteca "La Bottega", close to the entrance of the abbey. The restaurant "Osteria di Passignano" is connected to it. Of course, one can get in both Antinori wines. Together with the idyll of the surrounding countryside, this place should not be missed on any trip to Italy.
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badia a Passignano
Tenuta Badia a Passignano proudly produces a single wine. With the creation of the Consorzio Gran Selezione in 2013, the Chianti Classico of Badia a Passignano will be produced as Gran Selezione, a quality designation that is only given to absolute top wines and above which Riserva stands: at least 30 months of ageing are required, of which at least 3 months in bottle.
