More information about The Hermit Crab Viognier Marsanne - d'Arenberg

The Hermit Crab by d'Arenberg from the Australian wine-growing region of McLaren Vale in Adelaide is a rich, refreshing and crisp white wine cuvée vinified from the Viognier and Marsanne grape varieties.

In the glass, this wine is a pale straw yellow with greenish highlights. The bouquet presents a seductive aroma of white stone fruits and sweet pineapple, delicately accented by a hint of ginger. The aromatic and juicy palate reveals nectarine and peach, enhanced with candied citrus peel. These sweet aromas evolve into savory flavors reminiscent of almonds and spices. The generous, textured mouthfeel concludes with a surprising finesse on the finish.

Vinification of Hermit Crab d'Arenberg Marsanne Viognier

In small batches, the grapes are gently pressed and placed in stainless steel basket presses. The fermentation process is characterized by its length and coolness. About 4% of this Australian white wine undergoes wild fermentation - 14% of the Viognier is fermented in French oak. Marsanne undergoes a similar fermentation process.

Only at the end of vinification are the two grape varieties blended together and bottled.

Food recommendation for the d'Arenberg Viognier Marsanne The Hermit Crab

A real pleasure as an aperitif, with seafood such as shrimp, mussels or oysters, with sea fish- classic with fresh herbs and plenty of lemon as well as desserts and creamy cheeses.

The name The Hermit Crab

Many of the vineyards in McLaren Vale grow on well-drained limestone soils formed from the chalky remains of local marine fauna. The Hermit Crab, a reclusive crustacean that inhabits the discarded shells of others, is part of this marine fauna. This is how the name for the first McLaren Vale blend of Viognier and Marsanne came about. "Hermit" also stands for the abbreviation of the French appelation Hermitage, which is dominated by the Marsanne grape variety.
