The Tokara Wine Estate is located at the foot of the Simonsberg in the famous South African wine region of Stellenbosch. In addition to the winery, there is also a high-class restaurant and an art exhibition.
Tokara Winery - Wines from sandstone rock
In the centre of Cape Winelands rises Simonsberg, an impressive rock massif named after South Africa's first governor Simon van der Stel. With a height of 1399 m it is visible from afar and also offers excellent conditions for winegrowing.
The slowly sloping southern slope offers an ideal angle for sunshine, and this is also where you will find the vineyards and olive groves of Tokara. Already in the 17th century this valuable location was recognised and wine was cultivated here.
The terroirs of Tokara Estate
Tokara's vineyards range from 350 m to 550 m in altitude, and the soil is dominated by the mountains of the region, of which Table Mountain is probably the most famous. Sandstone and granite form the basis on which the vines of the estate grow. The composition of the soil gives the Tokara wines a good structure and prolonged reverberation.
The estate also has other vineyards in the Elgin Valley, a rather cooler region at Sir Lowry's Pass. The main varieties grown here are Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, which have a very special aroma due to the sandstone.
On the Tokara estate
Today Tokara offers three different series:
- Tokara Premium - Cuvées from different vineyards
- Tokara Reserve - Wines from individual sites
- Tokara Director's Reserve - wines from the best individual sites blended to create a unique cuvée
In addition to wine, Tokara produces olive oil in the classic Mediterranean style, which is used in the in-house restaurant. The estate also has a permanent art exhibition and a sculpture garden.
