1921 was the year when the Varvaglione winery was born in Leporano, Puglia, in the province of Taranto. The grandfather of the current owner and head winemaker Cosimo Varvaglione laid the foundation of the Varvaglione winery here. Today it is already the 4th generation of the family, namely Marzia, Angelo and Francesca Varvaglione, who guide the fortunes of the winery.
The basis for Varvaglione are the impressive 135 hectares of vineyards that the Apulian winery calls its own. First and foremost, the classic grape varieties of southern Italy are cultivated here, including
- Negroamaro
- Primitivo
- Aglianico
- Malvasia Nera
In addition, however, French classics such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc can now also be found in the rows of vines.
The wines of Varvaglione
Hardly any winery in the Puglia region has brought as much innovation into and onto the bottle as Varvaglione. This begins with the wine line"12 e Mezzo", a heart project of Marzia, Angelo and Francesca. Here, the name says it all, because the wines have only 12.5% alcohol, which in sun-drenched Italy is tantamount to an oenological tour de force.
With their reduced alcohol content, the "12 e Mezzo" wines not only meet consumers' tastes, which are increasingly shifting to lighter wines, they are also simply deliciously fresh and fruit-driven.
Other Varvaglione wine lines
The Bio Wine Collection
Visually a first class eye-catcher, these wines made from organically grown grapes bring the essence of Puglia most clearly to the glass.
The Fashion Edition Wine Collection
Each of the 12 e Mezzo wines shines here in a famous fabric pattern. Whether it's Primitivo in a houndstooth pattern or Negroamaro in a herringbone pattern, these wines are style-conscious representatives of the new Puglia.
Papale
Launched on the occasion of the company's 90th anniversary, Papale, also available as a Linea Oro premium version, is one of Varvaglione's flagship wines. Papale - Italian for "exactly" - brings the very best of the winery to the bottle exactly as Cosimo envisioned it. Two impressive Primitivo di Manduria that can hold their own with the region's greats.
Varvaglione Luxury Wine Collection
Here, as the epithet "Collezione Privata" suggests, the family reserves are bottled. Great Primitivo and Negroamaro with up to 14 months of barrel aging makes Varvaglione justifiably proud.
