History of the Kiefer Winery
The Kiefer winery in Eichstetten am Kaiserstuhl in Baden was founded by Friedrich Kiefer in 1851. Kiefer, who came from the Markgräflerland region, was himself a teacher and, with his enthusiasm and love for wine, began something completely new. 35 years later, his son Fritz Kiefer took over the estate and ran the business until 1930. The Kiefer estate in Baden-Wuerttemberg remained in the family's hands for ever, but finally in 2008 no interested successor was found. But the Kiefer Winery was lucky, because Martin Schmidt, who had been working as a manager in Eichstetten since 2003, took over the winery with his wife Helen in 2008 and expanded it to 15 hectares. In addition, Schmidt can also draw on grapes from various contract winegrowers for Kiefer wines, which gives him a total of 92 additional hectares.
What makes Kiefer wines so special
Today, Helen and Martin Kiefer make sure that Kiefer wines are young, modern, varietal and honest.
"For us, wine is our profession, hobby and passion."
According to them, authentic and exciting wines are Kiefer's goal. However, the Baden wines should not only be modern, but should also reflect the soils and climate of the sites. This is why the loving care of the vineyards and the gentle, individual development of the wines is so important. At the Kiefer Winery, for example, the wine is gently bottled by dispensing with unnecessary pumping processes and, in the wine cellar, relying above all on the helping hand of gravity.
In the vineyard, too, Kiefer uses a great deal of manual work to lay the foundations for high quality wines. This begins with fully ripe grapes, which are harvested in vineyards with low yields and then gently pressed. This is the only way to ensure that the taste of the fully ripe grapes - with their wonderful interplay of aromas and fruit acids - is reflected in the wines of Weingut Kiefer.
The portfolio of grape varieties at Weingut Kiefer ranges from regional kings to international classics and insider tips. Cultivated at Kiefer:
- Pinot Noir
- Riesling
- Pinot Gris
- Chardonnay
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Müller-Thurgau
- Scheurebe
However, it is not only the wines from Kiefer that are remarkably good, the names will remain in your memory forever.
Bestseller from Weingut Kiefer
In recent years, Kiefer has developed wine brands that have become real bestsellers with VINELLO:
- Mit den Wolken ziehen
- Schmetterlinge im Bauch oder
- Die Freude teilen
are just a few of the names that Helen and Martin Schmidt have given to their cuvée of top Baden grape varieties.
The Bag-in-box wines from Kiefer are also extremely popular.
