Long history of the Knebel winery

The history of the Knebel W inery goes back to 1642. In its present form, the Knebel Winery was founded in 1990. Since then, the highest maxim has been: respect.

The Knebel winery is located in Winningen, on the lower Moselle. When father Reinhard died suddenly, son Matthias Knebel took over the management of the Knebel winery in 2003. At that time, he had just started his viticulture studies, so he depended on the entrepreneurial support of Gernot Kollmann and mother Beate.

Matthias Knebel changed the direction as far as the taste of the wines was concerned. Whereas his father had mainly produced sweet wines, Matthias concentrates on dry wines.

A leitmotif: respect

At Weingut Knebel, there is respect. Respect for the natural conditions, because the terraced vineyards are grown on extremely steep slopes. The traditional grape variety Riesling transports the influences of the location particularly well. 

Respect for the wine culture, taking into account the slate, the steep slope, the river landscape, the grape variety.

Patience as an important factor

At Weingut Knebel, great value is placed on patience. The entire process is accompanied by a great deal of calm and time to allow for the special characteristics of the sites and grape varieties. The winery is committed to the idea of natural wine.

Renunciation is an important basic consensus: At Weingut Knebel, we do not use pure yeasts, fining agents, deacidification and sweet reserve. Maceration times are not shortened, fermentation takes place slowly, as does yeast storage. The results are deep Terrassenmoselrieslings with fine elegance 

The terraced landscape

The steep terraced vineyards of the Mosel stand out clearly from the vineyards in other regions. Manual labour is indispensable here. The vines of Weingut Knebel are partly true to the roots and deliver small quantities of the finest grapes. Except for a few Pinot Blancs, the Knebel family only grows Riesling.
