Markus Molitor - Noble wines from the Mosel

Markus Molitor took over his father's winery in 1984 at the age of only 20, the eighth generation. With the golden age of Mosel Riesling in mind, his vision is to build on this era with wines that can be aged for a long time and that showcase the unique characteristics of their sites. Molitor's fundamental philosophy is the careful and uncompromising craft of the winemaking profession, whether in the vineyard or in the cellar.

Markus Molitor in his vineyards

The typical terroir of the Moselle region is the slopes along the river, which are largely composed of slate. The wines of Markus Molitor grow on a variety of sites that stretch along the Mosel from Brauneberg to Traben-Trarbach. This gives the winery a great deal of choice when it comes to the exact soil conditions and microclimate of the site. This allows the perfect foundation to be chosen for each grape and ultimately each wine.

The top sites on the river

Markus Molitor's sites are among the best rated in the world's oldest site classification from 1816 to 1832. Among them are names like:

  • Bernkasteler Doctor
  • Graacher Himmelreich
  • Wehlener Sundial
  • Ürziger Würzgarten
  • Brauneberg monastery garden

The historic Zeltingen sundial in the vineyard

In total, Markus Molitor's vineyards cover more than 700 hectares. The vineyards are cultivated very carefully and yields are reduced in order to further increase the quality.

Craftsmanship at the highest level

In order to guarantee the quality of the wines from the very beginning, the harvest is carried out exclusively by hand and in several passes. This ensures the optimal degree of ripeness for each grape. Afterwards, the grapes are selected again in the cellar in order to have the best grapes available for the highest quality wines, such as Beerenauslesen. In the cellar, wooden barrels are used for fermentation, which are stored in a 3-storey vaulted cellar. The cool, damp cellar provides ideal conditions for the fermentation process, which is exclusively natural and spontaneous. No additional enzymes, pure yeasts or fining agents are used. The fermentation is followed by storage on fine yeast to give the wines the final touch and elegance.

The capsule colour system

A typical distinguishing feature of the individual wine varieties at Markus Molitor is the capsule colour. White capsules stand for classically fermented wines, which are the dry representatives. A green capsule indicates a somewhat higher residual sugar content, here you will find the estate's fine-tart wines. By the way, fine-tart wines are the traditional Moselle Rieslings. Finally, the golden capsule adorns the noble sweet varieties. To help with the "Molitor system", a small scale with the three colours is printed on the back of each wine. A marker shows the position of the individual wine on the "sweetness scale". That's why you won't find the designation "dry" or similar on any Molitor wine.
