The Spiess Winery from Bechtheim is located in the middle of a traditional wine-growing area. Today it is run by a trio consisting of Jürgen Spiess and his two sons Johannes and Christian.
Wines from Spiess - the best from Rheinhessen
The Spiess family looks back on an exceptionally long winegrowing tradition that dates back to 1509. Each generation has modernized the winery bit by bit while at the same time preserving the tradition. Today, it is the two sons who bring new know-how and a fresh breeze into the business and bring it up to date. Tradition is only one keyword for the Spiess family. The love for wine as well as the preservation of nature are also part of it. For example, the winery is a member of Fair'n Green. The Spiess Winery cultivates a total of 29 hectares, of which almost a third are planted with Riesling. In addition
Pinot Blanc
Pinot Noir
Dornfelder
Chardonnay and
Pinot Gris
are also planted. The goal of the winegrowers is always to bring clear and pure white and red wines to the connoisseurs of this world.
Winery with various locations
The Spiess Winery is allowed to use the best sites of the region for the cultivation of its wines. The trademarks here are deep loess soils and shallow gravel, which together create a very fertile soil. But also loamy soil is available here, for example on the single vineyard Heiligkreuz, which is situated to the south-southwest with a sloping slope. Especially mineral wines grow here. To describe the many other sites of the Spiess Winery would go beyond the scope of this article. The variety offered to the winegrowers here is too great. But they all have in common that the grapes are reduced and selected by hand. Young wines at Spiess are fermented spontaneously and lie on the full yeast until the summer of the following year. Basically, wines are produced in three classes: Estate wines, local and selection wines as well as site and reserve wines. The estate wines represent especially the typical characteristics of the plots. Local and selected wines, on the other hand, come from special and selected sites. The regional grape varieties are the main focus of the annual wine production. The red local wines are allowed to mature for 15 months in small oak barrels.
Knowing that can be tasted
Every year, the Spiess Winery produces no less than 210,000 bottles. Johannes Spiess uses his winemaking skills, which he learned in top German wineries. It didn't take long and the Spiess wines were among the best wines in Rheinhessen. Wine guides like Gault & Millau or Eichelmann emphasize the high level of the young winemaker. So it is worth to try one of these noble wines.
