Wohlmuth - Top wines from southern Styria
The winery Wohlmuth, located at the foot of the Kitzeck mountains in Styria, has been run as a family business for 200 years now. Gerhard Wohlmuth and Gerhard Wohlmuth junior are currently in charge of the company.
As one of the southernmost wine-growing regions in Austria, winegrowing is characterised by the warm Mediterranean climate and cool winds from the nearby Alps. There are strong temperature fluctuations between day and night. This very special Illyrian climate is complemented by the steep slope orientation of the Wohlmuth family and the remarkable sea level of up to 600m above sea level. All these factors contribute to the distinctive, unmistakable character of the Wohlmuth wines.
The vines in the individual vineyards, including Hochberg and Rabenkropf in central Burgenland, thrive on palaeozoic slate. This primary rock helps the red wines of the Wohlmuth winery to achieve a mineral character and a very complex fruit structure. The red wines are aged exclusively in wooden barrels, which rounds off the taste and quality of the products produced here.
