The Location and the Wiener Gemischter Satz

The Weingut Zahel is located in the middle of Vienna's 23rd district - a small town called Mauer in the southeast of the city. Only a few minutes into the city centre and still some vines of the Zahel family grow in the middle of the city - of course also in the suburbs and outskirts of the city. For Vienna is really an exception for winegrowing - over 600 hectares stretch over the entire city.

Apart from its location, the Weingut Zahel remains true to certain Viennese traditions - namely the Wiener Gemischter Satz. This wine is made from 100% grape varieties from a vineyard. The prerequisite is that a total of 3 white wine varieties are planted colourfully mixed next to each other and these three are fermented together. The main wine may only be 50% and the third variety at least 10%.

In the vineyards of Zahel the following grape varieties grow:

• Grüner Veltliner
• Riesling
• Chardonnay
• Zweigelt
• Blaufränkisch
• Saint Laurent

Richard Zahel does not work alone - his nephew Alexander Zahel is at his side - a family winery in the fourth generation. The two love the diversity of soils and microclimates in and around Vienna. The two winegrowers enchant the senses with their Austrian wines and always work under the same motto:

"The whole of Vienna in one wine"
