Middle Rhine Wines

(5)

The Middle Rhine is the northernmost wine-growing region on the Rhine and begins not far south of the former federal capital Bonn. In the south, the Mittelrhein merges with the Rheingau. The Mittelrhein may not have the prominence of the Mosel, Rheingau or Pfalz, but the wines don't mind - they are exceptionally good.

With a total vineyard area of 467 hectares, the Mittelrhein is the second smallest wine-growing region in Germany, with over two-thirds being Riesling, followed by Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau and white Burgundy varieties.

Winery Eberbach in the Rheingau

The Eberbach winery and monastery in the Rheingau wine-growing region is without doubt the largest winery in Germany. It comprises a good 250 hectares of land for growing various grape varieties. The rooms of the traditional monastery are used today as a wine bar, monastery shop, conference centre, hotel, registry office or film set. The Riesling grape variety is mainly to be found in the extensive vineyards. The Riesling quality wine from the Eberbach vineyard is vinified dry or semi-dry. The fruity bouquet of this grape variety exudes a pleasant and youthful fragrance. Of course, there are also other white wine varieties that come from the Eberbach Winery. Pinot Gris or Pinot Blanc come from the Hessische Bergstrasse, where the monastery has additional vineyards. They give the monastic wine from the Rheingau with its partly nutty, partly fruity aromas of pear or honeydew melon variety in taste.

The Eberbach Winery produces red wines that have developed an excellent spiciness on sunny days and warm nights. The Pinot Noir from Assmanshäuser Höllenberg in the Rheingau has been cultivated since the 13th century. This red wine is ruby red and gains a smoky note through barrel ageing. The terroir of slate, quartzite and loess loam effortlessly stores the heat and releases it at night to the red Spätburgunder grape variety. This benefits the grape in steep terrain and results in a complex structure that promises great pleasure. Both the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Eberbach Winery are known for their powerful bouquet. The dry red wines exude an intense fragrance. The contained tannins make the red wine full-bodied. Some scenes of The Name of the Rose (Umberto Eco) were shot in the traditional halls of the monastery. Whether Sean Connery, Christian Slater and Jean-Jaques Annaud tasted the delicious white wine or red wine from the monastic winery is not known, but very likely. If not, however, then they have missed what more than 300,000 tourists come here every year for: to taste and enjoy the wine from Weingut Eberbach in the Rheingau.

The soil in the Rheingau wine region

The soils in the Rheingau are very different and give the individual grapes a charismatic taste. Although the hard quartzite soils near Lorch am Rhein absorb water poorly, they allow the roots of the vines sufficient space to expand. Aeration of the roots is also guaranteed on the partly sandy and loamy soil. Although the soil is quite poor in nutrients, it is particularly characterised by its ability to absorb and conserve heat. The area near Kiedrich is characterised by old volcanic rock. The green and grey rock, which is predominantly flat-shaped, is also known as sericite gneiss. It can be found in the high hills. Because the soil hardly stores any heat and because it rains quite a lot here, these areas tend to be cold. Other soils include clay marl, sandstone, phyllite or slate.

The Rheingau wine region

Rheingau is a small wine-growing region with narrow cultivated areas to the right of the Rhine. From Wiesbaden to Lorch, the vineyards face south. Mainly Riesling and Spätburgunder are vinified. The soils are very different, which in turn affects the taste of the individual vines. The largest winery in Germany is located in the Rheingau: Kloster und Weingut Eberbach. Surrounded by many trees, the temperatures do not drop very much at night. The average annual temperature is about 10.5ºC, in the ripening months it is about 15.5ºC.
