Sardinia

(78)

The beautiful island of Sardinia has not only light blue water, clean sandy beaches and a Mediterranean climate. The wine from Sardinia is in a class of its own. The white wine Vermentino is fruity and intense in taste. A Cannonau is as red as a sparkling ruby and convinces with an all-round harmonious taste. Wine from the island of Sardinia is a very good choice in every season.

Trias with taste from Sardinia

The Sardinian vineyards are planted with autochthonous and imported grape varieties. The best known among them are from the north of the island to the south: Vermentino, Cannonau and Carignan. Each grape variety culminates in a delicate wine that promises a unique taste. The southern Carignan (also known as Carignano) is grown between the capital Cagliari and the southwestern Sulcis landscape. This intense, almost opaque red wine sometimes carries notes of blackberry and blueberry, which make it particularly fruity. As a summery red wine, it exudes a fine bouquet. The wine Carignan from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia is very popular, which is also due to the high tannin content and the long, careful vinification. There are plenty of sunny days on the Italian island. The warm to hot summers are a good prerequisite for full-bodied grapes, which are a delicacy as wine.

Vermentino, the white wine from the north and center of Sardinia

Vermentino is the most famous white grape variety in Sardinia. The majority of the Italian Vermentino vineyards can be found on the Mediterranean island. The high altitudes and lower temperatures in the north favor the cultivation of the fruity grape. Some light Vermentinos from Sardinia have the aromas of apples, lemons, figs or papaya. In the Sardinian northern regions Gallura, Anglona, Romangia and Nurra the white wine develops a fresh, tangy acidity. On slate or, for example, granite, the complex, yellowish wine sometimes acquires mineral characteristics.

The harvest of the sparkling Vermentino is in September and October. Especially worth mentioning are the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG. The white wines with the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) quality and origin designation exude a delicate and extremely pleasant bouquet. The aromatic wine echoes on the palate for a long time and with great pleasure.

Typical for the wine from Sardinia: Cannonau

Cannonau (also called Grenache) is a very well known, typical red wine from Sardinia. After the grape harvest the Cannonau often matures over a long period of time. The mostly ruby red wine passes through several tanks and barrels. Finally, the aromatic wine is aged in the bottle. Sometimes it takes up to six years before the pleasure can be given free rein. When the wine bottle with Cannonau is then opened, the fragrant, elegant bouquet unfolds and often exudes a fruity and slightly sweet smell.

This wine is well suited for Sardinia. Because the red grape is resistant. It copes well with the very warm, low-precipitation summer months of Sardinia. In Sardinia there is often a strong wind. Cannonau defies this effortlessly and ripens unswervingly on granite or sand. We recommend the dry red wine from VINELLO.de for game dishes, beef or pork.

Winery in Sardinia

The Sardinian grape varieties are well treated on the estate. The winegrowers, who grow their grapes with family care, sometimes allow visitors to taste them in the wine cellar (ital. cantine). The oak barrels are stored there lying down. This gives the wine the opportunity to rest, mature and develop its unique taste.

Many wine roads in Sardinia lead along the vineyards. On the journey it is often worthwhile to pause and let your eyes wander. The wine-growing region reveals itself with gentle hills, surrounded by a mountainous landscape, blue skies and beautiful green nature. The winery Sella & Mosca is large, influential and traditional. International reputation and excellent wine speak for this successful winery from Sardinia.

Wine growing region Sardinia

The Italian Mediterranean island has optimal conditions for white and red wine. Many intensive sunny days and a Mediterranean climate allow the vines to ripen fully. Rainfall is very low in summer, but increases again shortly before the grape harvest in late September and October. In Sardinia wind is a constant companion. Temperatures rise noticeably from north to south due to the geographical exposure of Sardinia. Vermentino is grown in the north, while red grapes are grown in the south. The autochthonous grape varieties of Sardinia stand out from the rest of Italy. Light blue water, fine sandy beaches, a rich flora and the magnificent wine make the big island a popular tourist destination.

It is likely that the Phoenicians brought viticulture to Sardinia in the 1st millennium B.C.E. Are there only white and red wines from Sardinia?

No. There are also rosé wines. Sardinian dessert wines sometimes remind one of sherry or fine and fruity berries.
