Wolfram Proppe - Exclusive wines from the river Saale
The Wolfram Proppe winery is located in Löberschütz in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region. Wolfram Proppe is a 1982 vintage and learned the vintner profession, to then add a degree in viticulture, enology and distillery technology in Weinsberg, the oldest German viticultural school. In 2007, he finally founded the winery, which he has been running as a sideline at first, but since 2014, he has been running it full-time. He is supported by Wencke, who takes care of the organizational processes in the background and is the contact point for interested parties and customers. A special concern of the Proppes is the preservation of historic grape varieties, which are acutely threatened by extinction in many places because they are no longer planted and hardly grow wild. They also like to get involved in the region as a whole and take care of the preservation of regional traditions.
The vineyards of Wolfram Proppe
The Proppes' vineyards are located around Golmsdorf, which offers a special microclimate. We are here at the exit of the Gleistal in the northeast of Jena. Here we find the Golmsdorfer Gleisburg vineyard, a south-facing slope protected from westerly winds by the so-called "Jena Horseshoe", a ridge of hills reminiscent of its characteristic shape. The soil consists mainly of shell limestone. At the very top of the Gleisberg you will also find the ruins of the Gleisberg or Kunitzburg Castle, which gave its name to the location. There are still many former vineyards scattered around the area, on which vineyard cottages still stand, from which one can guess the wine-growing history of the area.
Grape varieties on the Wolfram Proppe vineyard
The Proppes grow a variety of grape varieties. Among them are:
- Auxerrois
- Chardonnay
- Cabernet Blanc
- Cabernet Jura
- Kerner
- Pinot Blanc
- Riesling
- Müller-Thurgau
- Bacchus
As can be seen, Wolfram Proppe has focused mainly on white grape varieties, as he sees the greatest potential in them combined with the regional climate. Cabernet Blanc and Cabernet Jura are two of the most prominent varieties that he presses under the "Neue Meister" line. Cabernet Blanc is a fungus-resistant grape variety and reminds of Sauvignon Blanc in terms of taste. Cabernet Jura is a red wine variety, which is also fungus-resistant and similar in taste to Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Proppes produce only small quantities of their wines out of conviction, in order to keep the quality high and to offer a special, regional wine. If you are looking for something special, an exotic wine of high quality, Wolfram Proppe is the right place for you.
