Sangiovese

A red wine in diversity hardly to be surpassed and yet a symbol for Italian Vino Rosso from a single source: Sangiovese. The most important variety of Italian red wine, with its full fruity taste and elegant structure, is recommended as the basis for the most noble wine compositions. Supertuscans, Brunello, Chianti.

Varietà Italiano - Sangiovese

Sangiovese is a powerful grape variety, for everyone, for you, for all of us. Whether as a smooth table wine or opulent top wine. Find pure Italian Sangiovese red wine or a harmonious cuvée at VINELLO, your wine store for purple variety.

Blood of Jupiter

Sangiovese, sanguis juvis, blood of Jupiter. Blood that flows in every Italian, from Puglia to Tuscany. No other red wine has a higher status, no other is vinified so extensively and with such nobility. On more than 100,000 hectares, the fleshy grapes line the ridges of the hills. Sangiovese is the leading grape variety in Italy, because the potential of this grape variety was quickly recognised. As the basis for the most famous wines, the round red wine is responsible for a multitude of creations. The most famous cuvée is without doubt Chianti. This very fruity wine is blended with a shot of Canaiolo, for the dark colour. Depending on the type of wine, at least 70% Sangiovese can be found in the elegant body. This alone is enough to emphasize the significance of Sangiovese wine. However, this alone does not do justice to the red wine. As a solo entertainer, Sangiovese wine has a unique character, which it promises with its brick-red body.

Sangiovese wine taste

As varied as the Sangiovese wine is, so varied is its character. While young wines reveal notes of cherries, berries and floral aromas of iris and violet, the older Italian red wines, aged in wooden casks, express themselves with a bouquet of plums, blackberries, undergrowth, tobacco and leather. The basically dry red wine shines bright red in the glass and has a distinctive structure with a high acidity and tannin content. Sangiovese is typically dry, but is also produced as rosé, sparkling and dessert wine. One grape, many possibilities. Another reason why Sangiovese is often chosen as a blending partner.

There are many such cuvées. The Chianti Classico with at least 80% Sangiovese, the Chianti DOCG, Vino Nobile and Rosso Montepulciano contain at least 70%, but also pure varieties such as Brunello or Rosso di Montalcino convince as absolute top wines. Of course, the innovative treasures from Tuscany should not be missing from a list of quality wines. Supertuscans, with a strong influence of French wine art, are mainly combined with the deep red Merlot, as well as the Cabernet Sauvignon. The best wine characteristics of traditional red wines are combined - and at the same time a unique holiday feeling is created in the glass.

The heritage of the Etruscans - the origin of Sangiovese

Where Sangiovese originally comes from is still not proven today. Many small rural regions claim to know the origin. Nothing has been proven so far. However, speculations suggest that the Etruscans already cultivated Sangiovese. Therefore, one reckons with an autochthonous grape variety from Italy.

For a long time, a distinction was also made between Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo, as the grapes were found in different locations large and small. When winegrowers then planted the small grapes on sites with large grapes, it was quickly recognised that they were one and the same grape variety. The small grapes grew large.

Sangiovese has been present throughout Italy for centuries. The core areas are Tuscany and partly also Emilia-Romagna and Marche. Outside Italy the Australian red wines are recommendable. Sangiovese enjoys cult status here.

Our Sangiovese wine recommendation

Avi Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva DOC - San Patrignano

Pure variety, dark red, with characteristic violet aroma. The Avi Sangiovese di Romagna Superiore Riserva DOC convinces with its fully ripe taste and dense structure. The fruity bouquet of intense berries and spicy notes of cloves, nutmeg and cedar wood make this red wine, matured in wooden barrels, a harmonious palate.

Chianti DOCG 1,0 l - Villa Albinoni

A Chianti DOCG, typically fruity and smooth. A variety of berry aromas combine with a pleasant acidity. The vines, grown on dry, loamy and calcareous soil, are carefully destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks by the Villa Albinoni winegrowers after a selective harvest. A noble Chianti red wine at a fair price - A fine top wine to enjoy.

Things to know about Sangiovese

What is Sangiovese?

Sangiovese is an Italian grape variety that is cultivated especially in Tuscany. The red wine serves as a basis for many cuvées, and provides fruit and a high acidity and tannin content to the compositions. The name Sangiovese, also called Brunello, Calabrese, Montepulciano or Prugnolo, refers to the Latin term sanguis jovis, which can be translated as the blood of Jupiter.

How to store Sangiovese wine?

Red wine is generally stored cool, dark and lying down. Large temperature fluctuations should be avoided. Sangiovese is ideal for long-term storage. The Supertuscan or Brunello varieties can be stored for up to 20 years. A Chianti 3-4 years and Vino Nobile even 5-8 years.

How long does an opened bottle of Sangiovese last?

After the bottle has been closed with the cork again and placed in the refrigerator, Sangiovese keeps for up to 5 days after opening. It is best to avoid contact with oxygen. This means that the emptier the bottle, the shorter the life of the wine. A wine pump can be used to remove the oxygen from the bottle, but simple decanting into a smaller container also works to store opened wine for longer.

What goes well with Sangiovese red wine?

Goes well with pasta, pizza and the whole Italian cuisine and Mediterranean dishes.

How do you drink Sangiovese?

Enjoy your Sangiovese red wine at a drinking temperature of 16°C to unfold its full potential.
