Domaine Lafage has become a firm bank, especially for connoisseurs of the finest southern French wines, which is quite an achievement considering that Jean-Marc Lafage has achieved so much in just 20 years not far from the city of Perpignan.
It is clear that the location of the Lafage domain is of course perfect. Deep in the south of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, directly on the Mediterranean Sea and less than 30 kilometres from the Spanish border, both the Pyrenees and the water have a cooling and tempering effect.
Jean-Marc Lafage and his wife Eliane Salinas, both oenologists, started their wine-growing adventure here in 1996 and have expanded their estate to 150 hectares. With Domaine Lafage, however, Jean-Marc and Eliane are not limited to their region, but have also opened first-class vineyards elsewhere. These include, of course, Côtes du Roussillon and nearby Côtes Catalanes, as well as the sweet wine appellations Maury and Rivesaltes.
In addition, Lafage is currently building a Provence offshoot, which will be called "Mas Miraflors" in line with your highly successful Miraflors Provence rosés. Although Lafage takes great care of the development in Provence, the winery is located in the heart of the Côtes du Roussillon, at the foot of the Pic de Canigou, the "Mount of the Catalans" in the terroir "Les Apres", where the best grapes of the Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, Muscat d' Alexandrie and Carignan grapes are grown. They are extremely old and yield very low yields. The cuvée Léa and the Cayrol are produced from these old grapes.
