More information about Vintage Port - Niepoort
Niepoort's Vintage Port is an excellent, outstanding port made from Sousão, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional and other red Portuguese grape varieties.
In the glass, it is a rich opaque purple with a black core. The intense bouquet reveals wonderful aromas of full berry fruit, cassis and floral notes of violets. These are joined by hints of dried figs, licorice and freshly ground white pepper. On the palate, this port is wonderfully concentrated with a fantastic acid structure and tight, compact tannins. The finish awaits with incredible length and floral accents.
Vinification of the Port Vintage Niepoort
The grapes for this port wine are harvested by hand. The harvest took place in September. The grapes harvested in early September have a higher acidity - the grapes harvested in the second half of September have a higher maturity. This gives this Port its wonderful concentration, finesse and elegance.
In the winery Vale de Mendiz, the grapes (without destemming) are foot-pressed in granite lagares according to traditional methods. Over the winter, this wine is now stored in oak barrels (tonéis) in the Douro Valley. In April, the barrels are brought to Vila Nova de Gaia and the final blend ages for a total of 2 years in oak barrels and wooden casks.
Food recommendation for the Niepoort Vintage
This port pairs wonderfully with blue, blue-veined and strong hard cheeses (aged Manchego), fruits and desserts. And always remember: Vintage Port should be decanted!
