More information about 1921 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOP - Varvaglione
The 1921 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva DOP from Varvaglione is an exceptionally velvety and complex Italian red wine. Its deep ruby red color in the glass is already impressive, and this Primitivo di Manduria also has a garnet red color at the edges. If you give it a little air in the glass by swirling it, this red wine reveals a high density and fullness, which can be seen in church windows on the edge of the glass. Poured into a red wine glass, this red wine from Italy offers wonderfully expressive aromas of prunes, raisins, black cherries and dried fruit, rounded off by oak, black tea and gingerbread spices, which are contributed by the ageing in wooden barrels.
The Varvaglione 1921 Primitivo di Manduria Riserva impresses with its elegantly dry taste. It was bottled with exceptionally low residual sugar. This is a genuine quality wine that clearly stands out from simpler qualities and so, despite its dryness, this Italian naturally delights with the finest balance. Taste does not necessarily need residual sugar. On the palate, this powerful red wine is characterized by an incredibly dense and velvety texture. On the finish, this very storable red wine from the Apulia wine-growing region impresses with its considerable length. There are again hints of plum and dried fruit.

Vinum: 17/20 points for 2012
"A remarkable and finely matured Primitivo with a bouquet dominated by cedar wood, violets and eucalyptus. The fruit then joins in on the palate - remarkably fine for a Primitivo. The acidity is extremely subtle, the tannins extremely fine, yet gripping with a caramelized mocha core."
