Winemaking tradition in the Western Cape

The history of viticulture in the Western Cape dates back to 1655, when the first vines were planted in the province by Dutch settlers. Later, French Huguenots, who had to leave their homeland, brought their extensive knowledge and European vines into the country, which gave a great boost to the cultivation of the Western Cape and South Africa in general. As in many other parts of the world, the great phylloxera plague struck the Western Cape in the 19th century and brought viticulture to a virtual standstill. It was not until 1918 that things started to improve again, thanks to the initiative and energetic efforts of Charles Kohler. Kohler took care of the organization and regulation of viticulture. His regulations are still valid today, even though they have been extended in the meantime.

Due to the moderate maritime climate with a lot of warmth and sunshine, the land between the mountain ranges of the Cape Fold Mountains and the two oceans is perfectly suited for the production of noble wines. For wine tourists, who want to get to know the specific local conditions better, the existing wine tours are ideal.
