Location and structure of the Nahe wine region

The Nahe wine-growing region is located in Rhineland-Palatinate and extends along the river of the same name to before Krin and in the valleys of its tributaries, the Glan and Alsenz. Some sites can also be found on the Guldenbach and Gräfenbach rivers. In the north, the wine region is bordered by the Taunus Mountains, in the northwest by the Hunsrück and in the southeast by the North Palatinate Mountains. The Nahe wine region is divided into the following seven major vineyards with more than 100 individual sites:

• Pfarrgarten
• Rosengarten 
• Sonnenborn 
• Schlosskapelle

Climate and soil in the Nahe wine region 

The vineyards on the Nahe and its tributaries benefit from a favourable geographical location, shielding them from cold air currents to the north and north-west by the low mountain ranges. The sheltered location creates an almost Mediterranean climate, combining comparatively little rain, warm summers and frost-free winters. Many classic wine varieties feel at home here, especially Riesling, which tops the list of cultivated grape varieties. 

The extraordinary variety of flavours of the Nahe wines is not least due to the diverse soil structure. It is unique in Germany and is also unrivalled in other European countries. Thanks to an eventful geological past, quartz and slate, sandstone, volcanic rock, red-lying, loess and loam as well as porphyry and melaphyr alternate in the subsoil. In total, more than 180 different types of soil are available to the Nahe wine, from which it draws its richly varied quality. 

History of the Nahe wine region

The Nahe wine region can look back on a proud winegrowing tradition of 2,000 years. As in many other German wine regions, it was the Romans who introduced the cultivation of the noble vines here. By the late 19th century, Nahe wine was already considered a top international product.

However, the term "Nahe Wein" is more recent. The area between the Moselle and Rhine rivers first received the status of a wine-growing region in 1935. It was not until 1971 that the wine-growing region in its current extension was legally defined and Nahe wines were generally referred to as such.

How large is the area under vines in the Nahe wine region?

In the Nahe wine region, wine is grown on a total area of 4,237 hectares or 42.37 square kilometres. Among the 13 designated wine growing regions in Germany, Nahe is thus situated quite exactly in the middle, in 7th place after Franconia and before the Rheingau. 

Which white grape varieties are cultivated in the Nahe wine region?

A total of 54 white grape varieties are permitted for Nahe wines. Riesling, which accounts for 29 per cent of the total area under cultivation in the wine region, is a style defining feature of the region. Other important white grape varieties are Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. 

Which red grape varieties are typical for the Nahe wine region?

Of the 26 red grape varieties approved for Nahe wines, Dornfelder is the most common. In addition, Pinot Noir, Regent and Blauer Portugieser, for example, are cultivated in the Nahe wine region.
